Amira Perera

Sri Lankan speaker Amira PereraEven though most of my life has been spent in Canada, I was born in Sri Lanka. At age 13 my family and I moved to Central Africa for three and a half years. Living in three continents opened my eyes to a wealth of artistic and cultural experiences at a young age. Since Sri Lanka is a war-torn nation, injustice and unfairness has been rampant; as a result, my passion and mission in life is to influence and motivate others (especially by living what I ‘preach’) to see that every life has value. I have devoted my life to working for humanitarian causes (even leaving a lucrative job at an oil company to do this); as well as speaking, writing, and teaching on subjects that relate to justice. My life story is garnering much interest because I have successfully overcome an abusive childhood. Initially I ran away from home as a teenager, but little by little I was able to turn my life around. Since then I have achieved many goals I have set for myself, as well as helping and mentoring many others going through difficult circumstances. I have also successfully published articles and poems on racism and on brokenness.

My initial interests in music came from my parents (as both of them loved singing); but throughout my life I have played many instruments. In 2003 I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BA major in Music, and a minor in Psychology. Teaching, performing, and music composing for special events, has brought great joy and fulfillment in my life. A CD with my own original music will be a future undertaking. Also I plan to create a multi-media, multi discipline, artistic presentation based on various topics related to injustice.

And as a result of leading student clubs at University and College (and all that it entails), and organizing events / leading groups in church and humanitarian organizations, I have gained the needed experience to start my own venture. Also, I have a background in successful fund raising for charity events, student camps, and for equipment needed by disabled students.

Thoughts From Me!
Everything that we do in/with/through our lives has consequences. So, it is important to think and pray before embarking on anything. If you want your life to count for eternity, then you have to make choices now/today… that would affect your destiny for an eternity. . We all have choices to make…each and every day ……….. so chose wisely. And ….. always … work smart …. not hard.
